Something we should all be wheel-ly excited about is welcoming the Spring weather and National Bike Month in May. While my colleague Assemblymember Patricia Fahy may be the one who many associate with bikes since you often will see her riding hers around town, there is some exciting news to share from the Albany Bicycle Coalition for the 108th Assembly District bicycle enthusiasts. The Albany Bicycle Coalition (ABC) has rebranded its bike map as CapitalNYBikeMap.com to highlight bicycle-friendly routes throughout the Capital Region. As new bicycle infrastructure has been added, the map has grown to include these new projects, as well as adding strategic new connecting routes.

See below for more information from ABC on the expanded maps and lets get those wheels in motion:

CapitalNYBikeMap.com is a free, web-based bicycle map, first introduced in 2016. Its low-traffic, low-stress network consists mainly of quiet streets, bike lanes, and multi-use paths. The map can interactively plan a custom route between any two points of your choice. It is especially valuable for novice riders, people new to our area, and occasional riders (e.g., CDPHP BikeShare).

Ten significant new routes have been added to the map from October 2020 through April 2021. Just in time for National Bike Month, an annotated map can be found at:

Route 787 multi-use path, Cohoes. Starts at Dyke Ave.; ends at Saratoga St. just south of Mohawk River.

Cohoes / Lansingburgh / Uncle Sam Trail connector.  This east-west route connects Route 787 multi-use path; through Van Schaick Island; ending at the Uncle Sam Trail entrance on Gurley Ave. in Lansingburgh.

Watervliet multi-use path. Starts at 4th St. exit from Mohawk Hudson Bike Hike Trail (MHBHT); bike lanes in front of Arsenal; path ends at Hudson Shores Park.

Schuyler Flats Park to Albany Rural Cemetery. Starts at 4th St. exit from MHBHT; via multi-use path through Schuyler Flatts Cultural Park; ends at Albany Rural Cemetery.

New MHBHT entrance on Broadway, Menands. Just south of Riverfront Center. The only Albany County entrance to MHBHT between Colonie St. Albany and 4th St. Watervliet. This major construction project tunnels under I-787 ramp, then parallels the ramp to reach MHBHT. Our map continues west via Wards Lane to the Van Rensselaer bike lanes.

Walkway, UAlbany to State Campus. This short-but-strategic bike-pedestrian connection starts at the UAlbany sculpture studio, crosses the State Campus outer ring road, and ends at the inner ring road.

Niskayuna MHBHT to Central Park Schenectady. This north-south connection also enables a shorter alternate route from MHBHT to downtown Schenectady.

Upper Union Street to Union College. East-west route on local streets, connecting east Schenectady to downtown.

Vale Park to Central Park. Connects downtown Schenectady through designated multi-use path in Vale Park, ending in Central Park.

Electric Trail, Rensselaer County. The Electric Trail is now fully open to Hudson NY. Our map covers the 16 miles from Dunn Bridge, through East Greenbush and Nassau, to the Columbia County line.
