Starting on May 3, 2023, you will need a REAL ID to board a domestic flight (within the U.S.), or to enter certain federal buildings or military bases (unless you have a passport or another federally-accepted form of ID). A standard driver’s license alone will not suffice for boarding a flight without additional identity documents. NYS Department of Motor Vehicles has more information on how to obtain a REAL ID and what documentation will be needed to schedule your appointment. You can make an appointment at your local DMV county office here.

It is a good idea to schedule your in-person appointment now because it is anticipated that in May 2023, there will be high demand for REAL ID appointments when the requirement for air travel begins.  The reality is that although you can use your passport in lieu of REAL ID, who wants to cart that around and just add one more thing to the trip that can get lost or damaged.

As a reminder, a REAL ID is optional and is not needed for the following:

  • Being licensed to drive
  • Voting or registering to vote
  • Entering Federal facilities that do not require a person to present identification
  • Applying for or receiving Federal benefits
  • Accessing health or life-preserving services (including hospitals and health clinics), law enforcement, or constitutionally protected activities (including a defendant’s access to court proceedings)
  • Participating in law enforcement proceedings or investigations

That being said, I strongly encourage you to consider getting the REAL ID prior to May 3, 2023. If you have to renew your license, change your address or name, or make any other updates, it is a good time to change to the REAL ID at the same time to avoid paying for another transaction if you decide to get a REAL ID in the future.

You will have to go to a local DMV office in person and there is more information here on how to get started and ensure that you bring the correct documents.
